How To Create A Japanese inspired Interior

If your a fan of natural materials, open floor plans and minimal designs then you are sure to fall for the elegant styling of Japanese style interiors.

As with most Eastern interior design Japanese homes feature a perfect simplicity of clean lines, muted tones and serenity that will create an area of calm and contentment within your home.

    Serene Sleeping

As with all other rooms of the home, a Japanese bedroom is designed to be an area of zen and tranquility where you can escape from the stresses of the outside world. Nature inspired colour palettes, simple low beds and exposed wood, room screens come together with elegant, natural fabrics to create a soft and inviting area to peacefully drift off to sleep.

    Family Dining

Japanese people have a strong sense of family and unity, with the majority of meals eaten together as a family (no TV dinners!). Typical Japanese dining rooms are minimal in style with a simple yet practical dining table taking center stage in the room. Japanese dining tables are low to the ground but large in size to accommodate even the largest of families whilst the floor level seating is sumptuously cushioned to create a laid back ambiance that is both stylish and comfortable.

    Bringing The Outside Inside

Traditional Japanese homes will feature a courtyard, atrium or indoor garden allowing the beauty of nature and the outdoors to be appreciated at all times. Miniature ponds, rockeries and bonsai trees serve to create a fresh and green backdrop that creates a living piece of artwork that adds to the spiritual nature of Japanese homes. If you are looking to recreate this look in your own home, begin with a miniature atrium or a singular bonsai tree for a simple and inexpensive hint of Japanese style.

    Cherry Blossom

One of the most recognisable features of Japanese interior design is the delicate and beautiful imagery of the cherry blossom. This stunning image appears in variety of ways in Japanese interiors with dainty cherry blossom bonsai tress, cherry blossom printed fabrics and wall coverings. If you are a fan of florals then this elegant design looks great as a feature wallpaper or bedding design or for a more simple dash of pattern opt for small cushions, a miniature tree or even some cherry blossom pottery for a splash of feminine softness.

When it comes to furnishing a Japanese inspired interior, natural woods and traditional designs add an authentic style that creates warmth and cosiness against the typically minimal decor. Warm walnut, mahogany and ebony are crafted with simple yet eye-catching carvings and handles for a culturally recognisable furniture design. If you are opting for one specific piece of Japanese furniture then the Japanese step chest or ‘Tansu cabinet’ is sure to add an authentic and functional focal point to your home interior.

How To Revamp Your Old Dining Chairs

If your bored of your old dining chairs but don’t fancy splashing out on new ones, then why not try your hand at some furniture up-cycling and give your interior a fresh lease of life.

With a few simple steps and a little creative license you can transform your old dining chairs into chic and stylish custom designs.

A new coat of paint is a simple and effective way of giving your old wooden dining chairs a fresh and revamped appearance that will transform your interior.

    1. Strip any remaining paint or varnish from your old chairs and sand the surfaces thoroughly.

    2. Apply a spray or liquid primer to the wood and allow it to dry.

    3. Apply 4-5 thin coats of your chosen paint colour ensuring that each coat dries thoroughly in between layers.

    4. Finish your painted exterior with a coat of sealant or varnish to complete the final look.

Tired and worn fabric can make a dining chair look outdated and shabby. Whilst it may look like a complicated job, reupholstering your existing chairs is an easy and eye-catching way to add a fresh splash of colour or pattern that will complement your interior decor and design

    1. The most simple dining chairs to reupholster are those with removable seat pads.

    - Detach the pad from the frame and remove the old fabric covering.

    - Wrap your new fabric around the cushioned area and staple underneath using a staple gun.

-Place the cushioned pad back into the frame and your chair is transformed!

    2. For chairs with in built seat pads and back rests:

    - Begin by removing any tacks, studs or rivets and then slowly removing the old fabric from the foam, sponge or internal padding (start with the seat and then move to the arms and back).

-Use the fabric you have just removed as patterns to cut out the correct shapes from your new material.

-Staple your new fabric to the chair in the same order that you removed it, ensuring you keep the material as tight as possible and stapling every half an inch (on curves and corners you will need to fold the edges of the fabric underneath before stapling.

    - Repeat this process on the outside of the chair if needed.

    - If desired you can use hammered nail heads, piping or studs to cover the staples around the edge of the chair.

    - Sit back and enjoy!

With a vast range of bold and exciting wallpapers available on the market then why not co-ordinate your walls and your furniture with this fun and simplistic way of adding interest to your old or plain dining chairs.

    1. Once you have sanded your dining chair frame, apply your chosen wallpaper using wallpaper paste or spray glue (you can use one print or a collection of scraps to create a more mismatched appearance).

2  When the wallpaper is dry complete this look by adding a coat of clear varnish for a protective and glossy exterior finish.

For an added splash of customisation why not add some dining chair accessories that will compliment your interior look.

    1. Create some Fabric Bows in complimentary colours and patterns and tie or glue them to the backs of your dining chairs

2 Tassels look wonderful hanging between the open sections of slatted back chairs and can be easily recycled from old curtain tie backs

    3. Attach ribbon or fringing around the edge of your seat pad or back rest for a luxurious and creative finishing touch.

    Colour Trend – Neon

This week we are taking a look at the latest Neon interior colour trend that has been taking both the fashion and interior design world by storm.

From fun and funky yellow to bright and punchy pink, when it comes to neon interiors no colour palette is off limits! This bold and vibrant colour trend is sure to transform even the plainest of interiors into a happy disco heaven.

For an eye-catching selection of neon interiors and original images head over to Pinterest - Pinterest – Neon Colour Trend and check out our latest board.

Neon palettes are a bright and versatile colour selection that can be easily incorporated into a wide range of classic and contemporary interiors. Many people shy away from this bold interior choice however it is very easy to introduce vibrant colours in small and strategically placed areas that will not completely overpower your entire home.  A simple feature wall is a great way of adding a splash of colour into an otherwise plain interior setting; try painting a chimney breast, alcove or dividing wall for a stunning pop of vivid colour. If you prefer a more ‘all over’ neon look then why not go crazy and create a bold retro style interior using complimentary and contrasting shades of neon such as orange, red and yellow. These luminous colour choices can be co-ordinated with your bedding, furniture or upholstery for a truly psychedelic interior ambiance.

If you are looking for a quick and easy way of injecting some vibrancy into your interior then opt for a scattering of neon cushions for a pop of colour in your living room, bedroom or dressing room area. You can opt for eye-popping plain cushions or sumptuous patterned fabrics for an added depth of illuminating colour. Neon cushions, throws and rugs will look wonderful in a minimal interior setting and will give a fabulous contrast against white, black and grey interior decors.

You can transform even a minimal interior with a stylish selection of bright neon accessories. Vases, candles and ornaments look great on a mantelpiece, windowsill or table and create a great ‘color pop’ effect that can be zoned into specific areas of your home. Mirrors, wall art and photo frames also provide a fabulous splash of colour against a plain or neutral wall or can be personalised and painted to perfectly match your neon paint or wallpaper selection. Neon lamp shades and ceiling lights will create an eye-catching splash of colour that will draw the eye into the centre of a room. Cool tones such as blues and greens look great in the summer months whilst yellows, reds and oranges will create a sunshiny feel on even the greyest of winter days.

Whilst most people associate the neon colour trend with modern or minimal interiors there is no reason why this unique colour palette cannot be incorporated into traditional homes and decors. Why not try your hand at some furniture up-cycling and transform your classic or antique furniture items into a vibrant yet sophisticated addition to your home. Old sideboards, tables and dressers can be painted or sprayed in your chosen neon colour or for a more subtle yet still eye-catching design, you can transform your old dining chairs or occasional seating using a plain or patterned neon upholstery for a truly personalised interior style.

    Colour Trend – Peach

We are getting in the mood for spring this week at The Furniture Market as we take a look at the latest colour trend to hit the interior design world – Peach.

A popular interior colour choice in the 80s and 90s;  peach is making a contemporary comeback and is bringing with it a perfect pastel palette that will transform any home interior into a springlike haven of colour and serenity.

Head over to our latest Pinterest board – Pinterest – Peach colour trend for all original images and peachy keen interior inspiration.

    Colour Palettes

Pastel tones such as peach are a particularly versatile interior colour option as they work equally well with both light and dark interior palettes. For a fresh and uplifting burst of colour then you can pair peach with crisp whites, pebble tones and complimentary pastel colours such as mint and duck egg, creating a springlike ambiance within your home.  For a slightly more contemporary feel then you can combine peach tones with silver, grey and monochrome decors for a ‘pop’ of colour that will add an injection of light into your interior space.

Accessories are a great way of introducing a colour into your interior without the need to change your existing home decor. A scattering of plain peach or patterned cushions can transform a normally bland sofa, chair or bed and provide a chic and cosy area in which to relax. With the peach colour trend increasing in popularity as we enter into spring, head down to the high street where you are sure to find a wide range of vases, candles, photo frames and mirrors that will add a boost of brightness to any home interior.

There is nothing more appealing than the elegant swathes and sumptuous warmth of luxurious interior fabrics. A fabulous pair of peach curtains or a rich and texturally aesthetic throw will create a splash of illuminating colour that can lift the ambiance of an entire room. Satins, velvets and fresh cotton materials work great with peachy colour tones and look wonderful alongside white, grey and silver interior decors to create a chic and sophisticated space with just the right balance of function and fashion.

Whilst peach is not an everyday colour that appears in furniture collections, during the spring months this sumptuous colour becomes more prominent throughout the interior design world. ‘Colour pop’ furniture is an increasingly popular trend that works brilliantly with jewel and pastel tones to create a flash of colour in an otherwise plain interior. From chairs to cabinets; sideboards to coffee tables peach painted furniture will compliment almost any room and any decor within your home.

If you have chosen to concentrate your peach palette on your walls or floors then you can opt for complimentary furniture options that will bring out the fresh tones of your interior. White painted or shabby chic style furniture works particularly well with pastel decor or for a true splash of glamour and sophistication then you can choose illuminating and glistening mirrored furniture that will add to the uplifting ambiance of your chosen decor and create a sense of space and light within your home.
